This is a condensed version of the entire 2 hour presentation.

Learn its history and culture on Maui. How it impacts your health. the environment and our economy.

Speakers:
Alika Atay
Uncle Alika Atay was born and raised here on Maui where his lineage goes back several centuries. He currently resides at Hawaiian homes in Waihe‘e and is a practicing natural farmer. Uncle Alika is the current president of Hawaiian Farmers Union United, Mauna Kahalawai chapter.

Trinette Furtado
Born and raised in Lāhaina, Trinette Furtado spent most of her youth in a hale directly behind the Pioneer sugar mill. She has a daughter who attends Pā’ia School, which is surrounded by cane fields and she is concerned for her daughter’s health.

Susan Douglas
Susan Douglas moved to Maui from CA 32 years ago in search of cleaner air. She started the Maui Clean Air Coalition in ‘97 and held weekly island-wide public meetings to stop open-air cane burning and to help the whole island become self-sufficient. She currently sends out information via email for folks interested in all aspects of making Maui self-sustainable.

Rachel Reyes and Kimmer Spencer both work at Kihei Elementary School where Rachel serves as a kindergarten teacher and Kimmer serves as a health aid.

Dr. Lorrin Pang
Speaking here this evening as a private citizen, Dr. Lorrin Pang is a professor of medicine at the Federal University in Brasilia. Currently, and for the last 2 ½ years, he also serves as an advisor to the US Congress where he reviews medical research proposals. Dr. Pang has advised and taught for the World Health Organization for 20 years.

Dr. Joe Ritter
Dr. Joe Ritter has 4 advanced degrees in Physics including a Ph.D in measuring Aerosols. He is a multidisciplinary scientist who has published over 40 scientific papers and given over 100 invited lectures in many fields. His research over the last 38 years has covered many subjects including Birth defects and Biochemistry.

He is a NASA Innovation Award Winner, and now the Laboratory Director and Physicist, at the UH Advanced Technology Research Center.

We have invited him tonight to discuss the burning question, “What Are You Breathing?”

Dr. Josh Green
Dr. Josh Green received his medical degree in 1997 from Penn State University. After finishing medical school, Josh worked as a volunteer in the missionary hospitals of South Africa where he treated rural populations overwhelmed by AIDS and malaria. Named Hawai‘i Physician of the Year in 2009, he’s currently an emergency room physician on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. Additionally, Dr. Green serves in the Hawai‘i State Senate as majority leader and Hawai‘i’s healthcare advocate.

Lance Collins
Lance D Collins grew up on Maui, attended St Anthony School and has practiced law on Maui for over ten years. His practice focuses on good government law and some of his notable cases include Kanahele v Maui County Council, Goo v Arakawa, and Hussey v Say. He will discuss laws related to agricultural burning in the context of the Hawaii State Constitution.

Tina Wildberger
Tina is a longtime resident and homeowner here in Kihei. As an owner of two very successful businesses in North Kihei, Tina is also a community advocate who volunteers for Stop Cane Burning and Maui Tomorrow.
